Worth knowing
- Rapid City is the hub, but the best sights spread across the Black Hills and Badlands, so rent a car and budget real driving time between stops.
- Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the caves, and Custer State Park can be combined over two to three days; the southern loop and the northern Deadwood loop are best split into separate days.
- The scenic byways (Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road) have narrow tunnels and tight pigtail bridges, so go slow and skip oversized vehicles.
- Wildlife is everywhere: bison on the Custer Wildlife Loop have the right of way, and never approach them on foot.
- Buy the Custer State Park entrance pass and check cave tour times in advance, since popular tours sell out on summer afternoons.
